ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ON ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

Xiaomi Black & White E-Scooters

Electric scooters are coming to London and Londoners should embrace them.

We look at the best scooters for getting around the capital and answer your questions.

THE BEST e-SCOOTERS FOR COMMUTING IN LONDON?

There is one e-scooter that dominates the market: the Xiaomi M365 (and the M365 Pro). The M365 has a simple folding design, 30 km range, 25 km/h top-speed, low weight and pneumatic tyres. But you should not discount other e-scooters, especially the comparable Ninebot-Segway ES2. The ES2 is similar to the M365 in many ways. It also has a simple folding design, a 25 km/h top-speed, low weight and a dedicated app, but has shock absorbers instead of pneumatic tyres and a 25 km range (which can be boosted by a second battery). The most obvious physical differences are that the ES2's battery is stored in the handlebar stem and there are no external wires.

POLICING OF ELECTRIC SCOOTERS IN LONDON

The policing of e-scooters in London remains a concern for many riders. Technically, despite the government announcing their intention to legalise them in 2020, e-scooters are still illegal to ride on public roads in the UK. However, it is unclear if either of the two London police forces (City of London Police and Metropolitan Police) are taking any action. The "crackdown" announced in the summer of 2019 was exaggerated at any rate.
